I enjoyed this Hercules Poirot murder mystery - mainly because Poirot's personality shines in this classic style Christie. He finds himself in a small community staying at a chaotically-run and dirty guest house. Ariadne Oliver arrives on the scene and announces herself by throwing an apple core out of a car window and hitting Poirot squarely in the middle of the forehead. Poirot is there bc a man is on death row for killing his landlady and local char women. All of the suspects are residents of the community who may match descriptions and ages of women and their children who were involved in famous murder cases from many years ago and were featured recently in a tabloid newspaper story. There is a lot of humor mixed in with serious investigation. Can Poirot uncover the murderer in time?

There were a lot of characters (more than a dozen) and a couple of them had the same first name, and there were characters in the book and characters being discussed that might or might not have had anything to do with the murder, and it was all a bit confusing. I got a lot of clues, but because of my overwhelmingness, I wasn't quite sure what to do with them. I enjoyed it, but it wasn't my favorite.

LOTS of red herrings in this one, and I had a bit of trouble keeping people straight, as they aren’t really given very much detail to make them come alive. A bit cardboard, I guess. Also, this isn’t one where you stand much of a chance of figuring out the truth early on, because there are a lot of potential hidden identities. Still, plenty of good Poirot moments.

This book was definitely a page turner for me. Poirot seemed confused at who was the murderer throughout most the book, which was a bit confusing for me.
Poirot is returning from walking around town, just after enjoying a very well cooked dinner. His friend Superintendent Spence is waiting for him in the parlor with a case. When Spence tells Poirot the case, it seems like a closed case. James Bentley was sent to jail for killing his landlady, Mrs McGinty. But Spence doesn't think that Bentley did it. Poirot takes the case and goes into the small town where the murder took place.
It seemed like Poirot wouldn't figure this mystery out. There were a lot of suspects and a tiny bit of evidence. Until the second murder happened. Then things began to pick up.

Finally one where I'd thought I'd solved it before the end! And hadn't! pretty fun that my guess of Maude was almost an alternative ending, though, since she had had the idea to murder the one lady...🎉
