Huge fan of this series and Commissario Brunetti and especially of Signorina Eletra(?). My favorite part was the "buzz word bingo" she invented for the office to play during the weekly meetings. Definitely will be instituting that at my work place soon.
As for the mystery -- it was not traditional and it was a little hard to follow, but believable in that aspect. I appreciated the glimpse into the compicated relationship between Guido and Paola and the issues of two people taking very firm stands on their positions on important questions of law and morality -- especially when the two concepts are at odds. The question of the tentacles of the Mafia in so many aspects of Italian life was also an interesting one to explore.
But really -- even if I had not enjoyed the book (and I did), it would have been a great read just for the "buzz word bingo."

I enjoy reading Brunetti novels, this one was special because it told us more of his family, mostly his wife. The setting of Venice is always fun and the characters suitably well drawn for the story. This is another star for Ms Leon.
Read this when I ran out of material on the airplane. Italian detective writer. Love the scene. Made me want brioche.

I actually read this before, so I didn't reread, but trust me, it's terrific. It opens with Paola, Brunetti's wife, breaking a window of a travel company that sells sex tours to Thailand although they don't call them that. Excellent!
I enjoyed this quite a lot - I should probably have started this series at the beginning too - one of these days I'll learn! The writing, the characters and the setting were all well done. The only thing that I can find to fault was that I found parts of the plot a bit tenuously connected and I feel that some of the stray threads could have been better woven in. Four stars and the TBR pile pushed further skywards..
I have been working my way through the Guido Brunetti series from the beginning, and this is one of my favorites. What interests me more than the mystery itself is the interior life of Brunetti and the relationship with his wife Paola and their two children. This novel explores the relationship between Guido and Brunetti more than others and in a way that satisfies.
