"I can feel my soul fill up." I personally have literally said this about a good dumpling.

Academics are not it for everyone; trade school or work experience is sometimes the perfect fit for an individual. The Surprising Power of a Good Dumpling is a great lens into living with 1) workaholic Chinese dad, 2) Chinese restaurant culture, and 3) mental illness in the fam and having to be the parent to younger sibs.

Finished this book within 24hours. Think is my first YA book centred around Asian characters with topics mental illness. I laughed, cringed and at times cried while reading this book.

My heart is all sorts of warm and fuzzy after reading this book. There are so many poignant and important observations about how the Asian community especially views mental health and it was so affirming to read about Anna’s (and her family’s) journey towards seeking help. I teared up a LOT while reading The Surprising Power of a Good Dumpling and I’m so happy to have found it.

Nothing beats a well written YA novel. It's all in here - family drama, boy trouble, good food and a wonderful narrator.

She’s not sick. She can come to the table. I sound like a mother — not my mother, but a mother.

Emotionally resonant writing, one which grapples with growing up in families with parents with mental illnesses, psychosis, eventual hospitalization, healing and relapses. With heartwarming and heartbreaking moments, this book is non-pretentious and revealing of many stories of people that are hushed and hidden.

Cute story. The ending was much more realistic than most novels regarding mental illness. However, it was quite off putting that the romance was between a 16 y/o girl and a 20 y/o man.
