She managed to explain feminism in a way that I understood.

I still remember my step-sister asking me if I was a feminist. We were in our twenties and my confused answer (why would she even ask me this?!) was "Yes. Obviously" and I followed that up with "Aren't you?" Her reply, "No, I'm not" accompanied with a wrinkling of her nose, astonishes me to this day. It was unfathomable to me that in the 90s a woman, born and raised in New York City, would NOT be a feminist. "But you believe that men and women are equal, don't you?" (Yes) "And you believe that women deserve the same rights as men do?" (Yes) "So then you're a feminist..." (No, I'm not) It came down to stereotypes... Stereotypes created by men to disempower women who were finding common ground in that term.
To this day I'm still appalled (and, if I'm being honest, a bit disgusted) by her inability to call herself a feminist. Yes, every sane human being in the fucking world should be a feminist. This is a great basic essay on what feminism is and why it matters. It's a quick and easy read and a good jumping off point.
