This book had me guessing whodunit from the moment the murder happened. All the twists and turns offered many different ideas and I was floored when the murder was revealed at the end. My favorite character is still Gran followed by Lyla. It would be awesome to have Grand and Lyla solve a case...that would be a hoot!!

Thank you to NetGalley and Crooked Lane Books for an advance copy.

What a fun read! This is the first for me from this series, and I can't wait to read more. I love Young's quirky characters - Gran's my favorite!

I really loved the Jane Doe book club aspect of this novel! The friendships are wonderfully sweet. It was neat to learn more about one of Agatha Christie's mysteries (as I've never read any of them but I love the story of her life). Overall, this felt like a typical cozy mystery for me. Well done, interesting and enjoyable.

Review to come
adventurous funny lighthearted mysterious tense fast-paced

A cozy mystery set in Georgia, this is the second of a series. Lyla is a private investigator who works for her Uncle. When a dead body is found in her mother’s house during a charity event, Lyla becomes involved along with the rest of the Jane Doe mystery book club. The main suspect is the dead man’s wife who was part of the book club. It was a decent mystery but the start was a bit slow. Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC.

This one kept me guessing from beginning to end and really did keep me on the figurative edge of my seat to the very last page. It starts out with all the basic elements of a small-town murder mystery and then it evolves into a brilliantly convoluted tale of secrets and lies. The more that leading lady, Lyla, discovers the more she begins to doubt about everyone around her, and being along for that ride makes for a very exciting read.
Major props to Young for managing to wrap all the threads she wove into the story into one very rational and well-presented bow at the end. There was a moment where I thought there might be too many things going on for them to be satisfactorily resolved, but every i gets dotted and every t crossed.
Overall, it's a quick and very satisfying read that is sure to give your detective skills a good test.

Many happy thanks to NetGalley and Crooked Lane Books for the early read!

This is a cozy that will grab your attention if you like small southern towns, a book that has book themes, and a very punny title!

It has been a few months since we spent time with Lyla, our MC and in that time she has become more confident in her role as a Private Investigator in training. The Jane Does' book club has grown and the main member has become a very close-knit group. This month the book club has read and discussed Crooked House by Agatha Christie. This month someone was murdered at Lyla's parent's house. Similarities between the book and real-life occur and that makes for some very fun reading. I like the conceit author Kate Young is using in this series that we have the book club reading a book and then we have eerie coincidences between the book being discussed and what is going on in Sweet Mountain, GA.

The main issue I had with book one in this series, On Borrowed Crime, was that Lyla's parents and her ex-boyfriend treated her like she was a teenager instead of a woman in her thirties who knows her own mind. It made me think twice about whether I wanted to read further in this series or just read something else. As you can see, I decided to give the second book a go, and happily, in this book Lyla's decisions are respected.

The book takes place in the fall around Halloween, but it doesn't have a strong Halloween flavor. It will be out on September 7th, the day after Labor Day, a perfect cozy to kick off the fall season. Grab a PSL (Pumpkin Spiced Latte) and kick back and enjoy this fun second book in the Jane Doe Book Club Mystery series.

4.50 stars I recommend this cozy and am looking forward to the next book in this series. It's really picking up steam!

I rec'd an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. All the opinions are mine.

Thank you to the author, publisher and Net Galley for providing a free ebook of this title in exchange for my review.

This book is a cozy mystery, book 2 in a series. Cozy mysteries are fun, but not really realistic. They all seem to be full of towns of busy bodies who can investigate and solve a murder better than any police detective. I've heard them referred to as "hallmark channel mysteries" and I think that is accurate.

Still, they are fun and relaxing to read, and I've probably read hundreds of them over the years.

I haven't read the first book in this series, so I didnt' know the characters really well, but I felt like I could follow along fairly well. This was a typical cozy, fun and light, and I could see myself picking up the next in the series.
lighthearted mysterious

Dollycas's Thoughts

The Jane Doe Book Club is reading Crooked House by Agatha Christie. The group discussion focused on whether the heroine's actions were believable. Soon thereafter, Lyla Moody and her grandmother find a dead body at a charity event hosted by Lyla's mother. Eerily, the murder has similarities to that very mystery.  A brass candlestick to the head appears to have killed Leonard Richardson and his pockets have been emptied.  His widow, Harper is the police's prime suspect but Lyla and the other members of the reading group believe her to be innocent. They work together to piece together the clues while referring to the Christie mystery for anything that will help pin down the real killer. Lyla's investigation uncovers some secrets that personally affect her life too.

_____

Ms. Young has created dynamic characters for this series and in this installment we delve deeper into Lyla's mother's and uncle's past and it is quite intriguing. While the Jane Does want to help their friend, Harper, Lyla's mother takes a special interest as well.

The murder mystery was fully entangled with every subplot along with the parallels to Christie's Crooked House. I found the story gripping and layered. The victim's family was an eclectic dysfunctional group, each stranger than the next and all suspects. Secrets and lies abound with twist after twist and a powerful turn that kept my eyes glued to the pages. I was so taken aback by the ending. The author brought everything together with an expert hand.

I have not read Crooked House. From what I had read others say about the book I thought I should read it before reading this one.  But the synopsis kept calling me. I loved the first book, On Borrowed Crime so last week I decided to start reading.  I found Ms. Young did a wonderful job filling in everything readers like me needed to know and I was able to enjoy Reading Between the Crimes fully. My apologies to her. I still have Crooked House on my To-Be-Read shelf so I will read it someday but I am so glad I didn't wait any longer to read Ms. Young's book.

Reading Between the Crimes is a riveting story with characters who are well-developed and continue to evolve. I am very excited to read the next Jane Doe Book Club Mystery, Crime for the Books. I see it has parallels to another Agatha Christie novel but I am not going to let that hold me back again. I have learned my lesson. I hope I can find a spot on my reading calendar soon.
