Five year old Sharla Cody is sent to live with seventy-year old, Addy Shadd. Addy is in no way related to Sharla but she is the first person who answered her door when Sharla’s mother, Colette knocked and offered to take Sharla for the summer. Addy lives in a trailer park. She is all alone, so when Colette is looking for someone to take Sharla; Addy agrees. It will be nice to have someone to talk to again. Sharla and Addy will teach each other things despite their age differences.

Ok let me first get this out of the way by say this “Oh My Gosh”. I did not realize how much this book was going to affect me. The reason is that Lori Lansens has such a distinct, prolific writing style that Addy and Sharla just came alive for me. It was like I was living in that trailer park along with Sharla and Addy. The friendship that Sharla and Addy formed with each other was precious and one to be treasured forever. I started reading this book last night and in a matter of only a few hours I had finished reading Rush Home Road. For being Lori Lansens first novel as well as the first one I have read by this author, I give it a perfect ten! Rush Home Road just became one of my new favorite books. Lori Lansens is one author to watch out for. A true powerhouse.

Hard to get into at first, but sucks you in. A few sex scenes to graphic to suit me. Interesting that there was prejudice against black people even in Canada! the stories of Addy Shadd and Sharly Cody are compelling. What is going to happen to Sharly when Addy dies, as seems imminent? The conclusion might be a bit too pat, unless you live in Virginia and have that kind of coincidence often.

One of the saddest books I've ever read, but very touching.

Interesting but not my cup of tea. I couldn't stand to read about child abuse & neglect in the first chapter of this novel. I ended up skimming the book for plot.

This book made me gasp at the end. And then sort of choke cry. It was just such a great ending. The rest of the book was soooooooo good, too! I am so touched by Addy's life and all that happened to her.

BUT! This book is SAD. It starts off sad, gets a little more sad, then even more sad until you gasp at the end and choke cry. Yes, I recommend this book, but it may not be for everyone.

This was a good "make you cry" book that kept me very interested from page 1 until the end. It was a very sad book without being unbelievable. I especially liked that so much of the story took place either in Detroit or in the Canadian border cities of Detroit, since I have family in the Detroit metro and it was interesting to read some of the history there.

I really liked this book and I like the author. This is about finding happiness, making do and who our real families are. Addy Shadd was a lovely character I'd love to meet.
