Usually a big fan of Philippa Gregory but this book (and series) has not been my favourite. Alternate characters and storylines became a huge focus above resolving the storyline with existing characters and I didn't feel invested in any of them.

The third in the story of Alinor and her sibling Ned, their families and loved ones. Impressively researched and exploring so many themes, Dawnlands follows the story of the English Court and James II & Mary of Modena and the expanding trades in people, sugar and goods. One of the best ways to understand history is through historical fiction - following the facts through a family saga and with the embellishment of interpretation, supposition and enhancing imagination makes it easier for the reader. I don’t think I’d read anything about James II for many years and had largely forgotten the story of how he was deposed, the baby in the warming pan and earlier uprisings against him, so this was a refreshing reminder. Philippa Gregory touches on equality, freedom, slavery, gender, roles, family relationships and many more as the tale unwinds. A thoroughly enjoyable read.

**I received an e-ARC copy of this book through NetGalley in return for my honest opinion*

Philippa Gregory is my O.G. historical fiction author. The way she captures every era she writes about keeps me hooked. I will always run to read her newest piece as soon as I catch wind of it. Dawnlands is no exception. Philippa Gregory has done a great job of branching out from the Tudor era and telling Alinor's story with the trouble and consequences of society's perception of women during the English Civil War and the Stuart era.
