I honestly had no idea what I was getting into when I picked up that book at the bookstore.
It sounded like a fun read about a group of grown up witches (lovely change from the young adult stories I have read in the past) who are good friends with each other and get thrown into an adventure.
When I glanced at the glossary at home and realized it was going to at least mention some LGBTQ related things, I got excited, still not knowing what exactly I'd get into.
Did the book sometimes felt like an excuse of the author to talk about some very important social issues? Yes. Did I love every second of it? I sure did!
We got awesome magic power, grown up protagonists with grown up problems and realistic relationships with each other, a broad spectrum of topics that get addressed and that work well with the story and the worldbuilding, and an interesting plot (even though it only really starts to build up and the actual "meat" of the story is probably yet to come in the following books).
Also, the villain made me absolutely furious and frustrated in a way that I've never experienced with a book so far. 5 stars.

I didn't know what to expect going into this one, but I read it pretty quickly and enjoyed it! It took me about 15-20% in to really understand everything that was going on and keep the characters straight, but then I was rocking and rolling. I was invested in the characters and mysteries of the plot. I think there are more in this series, and I definitely want to read more in this world.

HOW this book isn't a 5-star read FOR EVERYONE is beyond me! DID A BUNCH OF HELENA's RATE THIS?! This is the most powerful and enrapturing book I have read in A LONG TIME. It is DEEP! It is SO MUCH MORE than just a book about witches -- IT IS EMPOWERING.
This has been on my TBR list for OVER A YEAR and I am FURIOUS at myself for not reading it sooner. HMRC is EVERYTHING!!! THIS is the book I will now judge people by, you either know or you don't!

Libby audio. Creative premise. The not letting trans girls/women into the coven reminded me of not letting trans people into sports. This book felt allegorical. Bonus points for a character being a veterinarian.
