The book I needed amongst travelling and enjoying art. A question I have always grappled with and elegantly treated by the author. I found mention  of the US political landscape to be boring, but understood its place for context and a reflection of the author's lived experience. A reminder to love with your whole self, with knowledge, and with conviction. To do otherwise would be an injustice.

Self absorbed pretentious and overwritten

A beautiful and feministic perspective on how to approach great art by bad people. With many examples and their contexts. Dederer does not do the thinking for you, it does not provide you with the answer. It offers you angles from which you can approach the question at hand. I like the personal note the book has. The book feels like a captivating conversation about the topic at hand.

The viral essay this book is based on/written around was excellent — but the book hasn’t said anything that the essay didn’t already say more successfully or succinctly.
