This was such an entertaining educational read. The author tied together multiple stories from Chinese folklore to tell an adventurous tale of one witty girl who wanted to help her struggling parents. I learned so much about the symbolism and importance of certain items used for various holidays, especially Lunar New Year.
The intermingling of Chinese fairy tales and folk lore with the surface story of Minli's journey to change her family's fortune is delightful. The friendship Minli develops with the dragon, and all of the side characters that she meets along the way really move the story along, and keep you invested in her journey. The illustrations in the book are fantastic and pull the reader farther in to the Chinese culture.

This is by far one of our favorite read alouds over the years. My 7 and 5 year old were enthralled and captivated- no one can weave a story like Grace Lin. This book was a great companion to our unit study on China, rich with history and folklore and beautiful lessons on life.

Read this with my 5 and 4 year old boys. This was our second Grace Lin book in a row as we were doing a Chinese New Year Unit study. The boys likes this one best, because of the dragon. I enjoyed the other one more. But they are both fantastic. Great moral stories for young children and with tradition Chinese heritage as the back drop.
