Where the Mountain Meets the Moon holds myth status in our family.

Years after reading it together (first month living in China), my sons still reference its lush descriptions, magical happenings and artwork.

I love these kinds of stories. I listen to the Myths and Legends podcast all the time, and this was the first time I’ve found a children’s story in a similar vein. In some ways this reminded me of a Thousand and One Nights in that the story would often become a story within a story. This in turn made it feel very ancient in the best way possible. I haven’t read many stories that take place in historic China, so this was deeply refreshing, and I can see why it earned the Newbery Honor.

Exactly what I wanted to read! I love the interspersed stories. I loved the way everything came together in a perfect last sentence, like a purposefully wound ball of yarn. Loved that "line" could mean written or a kite string.

“Stories are not foolish,” Ba said again, in his quiet way.

“Says you!” Ma said. “Because you are the one who filled her with them. Making her believe she could change our miserable fortune with an impossible story! Ridiculous!”

“Yes,” Ba said sadly, “it is impossible. But it is not ridiculous.”

This book was an accessible, imaginative introduction to the genre of myth for my young son. We loved reading aloud together as we followed Minli's journey to discover the importance of contentedness, courage, and sacrifice. The story was beautifully woven together with Chinese folklore and traditional culture. I highly recommend it.

I read this book many years ago in a two-hour sitting, and in the years since, I've read it aloud with family, showed it to teachers I know who have since introduced it to their classes, and generally gone on and on and on about how wonderful it is! This Newbery Honor novel follows clever, resourceful Minli on a journey to bring fortune to her poor village by talking to the Old Man of the Moon she learned about in her father's stories. Grace Lin's worldbuilding, both through the many myths and stories recalled throughout the novel and through Minli's actual travels to a variety of wonderful locations, is truly impeccable, and her writing style in this book is utterly unique and beautiful. Lin's beautiful illustrations only add to the story, and her choice to include the perspectives of Minli's parents as they work to understand their daughter's journey is a brilliant one. But the very best part of this story is how so many seemingly-disparate story elements come together, perfectly fitting together like puzzle pieces, to create an immensely powerful and memorable message at the end. Don't miss this gorgeous novel!
