This book was on my radar due to the non-binary character (Ray), and as non-binary person it can be so hard to find any decently written characters (so many token stereotypically side characters with no point). However, as it looks like plenty of other people have said, this book would have been much more compelling from Ray's perspective, rather than reading about the protagonist (Simone) finding it hard to deal with both them coming out and them facing transphobia at work. If you are non-binary and deal with how you are treated at work, then what you kinda get from this book at times is an insight into how tough it is for cis people to live with that.
However, there's fun elements too: I liked the YouTube cooking elements, but that plotline was too easily resolved without dealing with the stuff that was actually raised from it, especially as it turned out to be more of a prevalent plotline than the romance at times. The food in the book does sound delicious, it was vividly presented. And I liked Simone's roommate Luna as a character, though Simone treated her terribly, and I know there's a sequel about her so I'll probably give that a go.

When I finished this book, I read through some reviews and found the negative reactions to be interesting. I agree that the main character may come off as obnoxious/bigoted, and I can see why readers would be frustrated that this story centers around her and not Ray. My take is that Simone is extremely socially awkward, but I found her mistakes to be generally believable, and I really enjoyed seeing her learn from them. I don't read non-fiction that often, so if my fictional reading can teach me something about being a better ally, then I really appreciate it. This is a SUPER slow burn, and I liked the angst, but I like this for more than the romance. If you are sensitive to certain topics covered here, I recommend reading other reviews before diving in.
