I read it years ago. I remember thinking that Alex Ross is a phenomenal artist, but that doesn't automatically make a person a writer.

This book was pretty bad. The artwork is good, but the story is absolute crap. The old man's reflection at the beginning is poorly done. The characters get introduced in rapid succession with no development. It glazes over their world war 2 era, and blasts through the present time. Everything is just too condensed, and the writing is not all that great. If you can find it cheap like I did it might be worth it to get it so you can cut out some of the full page spreads and put them on your walls, because the book is pretty.

The artwork was great but then I felt like I was in a Dickens novel, specifically, A Christmas Carol and I think I would rather read that.

Egads.

I loves me some Golden Age superheroes, it's true, and an entire series focused on their revival with Alex Ross at the helm seemed like a great hidden gem of a work.

Wow. It's *REALLY* not. In fact, it's utterly abysmal. So much so that I may be forced to do something of my own with these public domain characters, because this series is an injustice to them. Incoherent, ignorant and even a little offensive, this whole series hinges on half-baked pseudo-mythic bungling, and, even when in its last couple pages it manages to stumble onto an idea that works well in our current political climate, it still can't make me give even the remotest of shits. Poor pacing; sloppy art; hackneyed, lazy and unnecessary world-building; unearned plot twists and a central character who's a total, irredeemable asshat. Oh, and every character speaks in the exact same voice.

Seriously, this book is garbage.

I did not feel this story was as good as it could have been.
