I had to think about this for a few hours. I'd, at first, rated it a 3.5 (rounded up to 4), but now, I'm rating it a 2.
I kept waiting for a happy ending or more background info, some kind of reveal. But there was nothing. The main character, after a long life, dies alone.
40 women escape a prison when their guards run away due to alarms ringing. They wander the land for decades, not encountering anyone or anything else. They eat, sleep, bathe, and talk to each other. That's it. Nothing exciting happen, and they die, one by one, until only the youngest is left.
Thankfully, it was a short 6 hr audiobook. I don't think I learned anything or came away any better than I went in.

This book ended exactly as I wanted it to, and I felt at peace with its conclusion, even if the book in general was very disconcerting and almost “uncanny valley.”

I, who have never heard of this book before its sudden popularity on TikTok, made it a priority to read this translated work of dystopia. Beautifully written, I flew through this book with desperation. Ultimately, it left me with the understanding that being in a forever state of "why?" is perhaps the worst form of torture.

wow that was very bleak. i loved the premise and im uneasy with the ending, but I think that is the point. the final line really drives what is so frustrating about this book, that presumable the last human on this planet was full of hope of discovery. yet, she’s in a word with nothing to discover…..
