This is not part of the storyline set out by the 2018 movie. In this version, Klaw killed T’Chaka when T’Challa was a boy, M’Baku is a cultist leader attacking Wakanda, etc.

I did not enjoy this story as much as I did the movie. The Avengers were kind of obnoxious, and I didn’t feel like they respected T’Challa’s responsibilities as king, etc. Nick Fury was all the worst parts hinted at in the MCU version of Fury, but none of the good parts. I also didn’t care for how the book was laid out with the colored fonts for various speakers - it felt like the commitment was to that flashy layout over ease of readability or letting the story stand on its own.

For kids who want more Black Panther after the movie, this could be hit or miss. Some will love it and maybe be drawn to the comics for more stories from this version of Wakanda. Some will be disappointed that this doesn’t fit in with the awesome movie they fell in love with.

Black Panther adventure with a different storyline than the movie (good) but also a different back story on how T'Chaka died, who is in the Avengers (Captain Marvel), and what everyone looks like. Oh, and Ulysses Klaw is a totally different guy with different powers. So, a little confusing if the movie is all you have to work from, but still a solid adventure for young readers.

This story involves a plot to stir up trouble in Wakanda every time T'Challa is off doing Avengers things with the Avengers, which is currently more often than usual because there is an imposter Black Panther running around sabotaging SHIELD installations and beating up SHIELD-agent jobbers.

T'Challa makes some questionable decisions in order to move the plot along, but it eventually builds into a big confrontation with Klaw back in Wakanda, and a chance for T'Challa to regain the confidence of his people.

Several Avengers guest-star, and Shuri gets a decent supporting role.

Those picky about continuity should note that this is based more on comic storyline than the MCU version, but like the Gamora book in this series (I reviewed it here), it definitely tries to play to fans who have seen the films, but have not read the comics.

There were some editing issues, including a mess of a pronoun problem at one point, and the plot left a fair number of unanswered questions.

Still, it did the flavor of the characters well, and hit the right emotional notes in the end.

In this excitement of the last Avengers movie, why not publish a bunch of Marvel superhero books? This book focusing on the Black Panther is better than the one about Doctor Strange. It does not hit the reader over the head with the moral. Battle for Wakanda seems to have writing that is a bit more sophisticated, but still within elementary levels.
