Review Taken from The Pewter Wolf

Everyone in the Sin Eater's Daughter series knows the Sleeping Prince, but the no one really knows why he's sleeping and when/if he will awake. But centuries ago, the kingdom of Tallith was a utopia, filled with proud and privileged people. One of them was Prince Aurek and his twin sister, Aurelia. Both who will lead Tallith into a bright future.

But then the rats came. Desperate, the King summons a rat catcher to get rid of rats. But the rat catcher didn't come along. He came with his son and his beautiful daughter. Upon seeing her, Aurek decides to have her. This decision will set off a chain of consequences that will last for centuries to come...

The writing in this short story is just as dark and seductive as Sin Eater's Daughter. And it's good to see the bases of the Sleeping Prince fairytale. I loved the twisting of the Pied Piper tale and, from what I've heard, we do hear little snippets about the twins and this fairytale within Sin Eater's Daughter and Sleeping Prince.

What's also good is that this is a free story and it's not essential reading. If you only read the novels, that's fine. But if you read this and the other short story (I believe it's called Heart Collector and I think it was on the Waterstones's blog for a limited amount of time) , it gives up an extra layer to the darkly seductive world that Melinda has created.

Fans will devour this within half an hour. I can't wait to find time to start [b:The Sleeping Prince|27281393|The Sleeping Prince (The Sin Eater’s Daughter, #2)|Melinda Salisbury|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1445887398s/27281393.jpg|46660902] in the next few weeks...

I loved this so so much! I don't think I've loved a prequel this much but I guess it's a first! Highly recommend if you love this series.

Holy Rats this was incredible. I mean, how can I ever fault Melinda Salisbury's work? THERE IS NOTHING. Just sheer beauty and utter brilliance. This short story is exactly what I've been seeking after reading The Sleeping Prince earlier this year. I've grown fond of the mysterious heart-eating Prince and to read his origins story was more than satisfying.

There just wasn't enough to sate me for good. I NEED MORE. Well, we got as much of the back story as we could but I really need that final Sin Eater book so we can return to that twisted malevolent mind of his that I love so much.

What an eye opener though. I LOVED reading about the rat catcher and his children and I'm so intrigued by this sorceress princess. Also, PIED PIPER RETELLING. Ahhhh. I laaaaaaved it. So very, VERY much.

Perfecto.

3.5 Read this before book 2 or before book 1. I think it's so needed to understand the background of the sleeping prince and adds something to your reading experience.

Less than 50 pages, but still manages to be creepy and atmospheric. This gives a lot of backstory about the fairy tale of the Sleeping Prince.

A lot of novellas seem underdeveloped or rushed, but this one didn't. The pacing was good. Even though you know the story if you've read The Sin Eater's daughter, this is an expanded story that gives a lot of background information.

What I Liked...

✔ The idea of this story had me intrigued; a rat infestation causing trouble among royals. Were they going to be strange, magical rats? Was it going to be funny? Were they going to kill people? I liked the premise of this a lot.

✔ The fact it's only available on the Waterstones website, as a downloadable PDF file - so no cost!

✔ Despite being so short, I felt I understood the character's personalities well.

✔ Aurelia was my favourite character. She was intelligent and loved, yet still looked down on by her family. She was basically the Lisa Simpson of this novella.

✔ This story literally had zero relevance to the other books in the series. Not in the way of the land, the characters, or literally anything else. It's been a while since I read The Sin Eater's Daughter, but I didn't get confused at all. You don't even have to have read that book.

What I Disliked...

✘ I also didn't like the fact it didn't relate to the other books. It didn't feel like I was reading something from that world, and I don't really understand why it counts towards the series. It was just a short story.

✘ Every character other than Aurelia, especially her brother and father. Her brother has serious creepy manipulative vibes, and her father wanted to marry himself off to a young girl, the same age as his son? Sorry, but that's weird.

✘ Third person POV books are never usually my favourite, but this switched back and forth between characters so quickly that it completely confused me. I didn't always know who I was actually reading about.

This just left me with more questions! I hope the final installment brings everything together. I hate so many threads with no clean and clear connection. It just seems unorganized at this point....
