The Ghosts of Rose Hill was a beautiful and haunting story set in Prague. The main character, Ilana, is a teen who loves music and and art. When she spends the summer in Prague with her aunt, she meets some interesting characters and finds an old, overgrown, Jewish cemetery.
This book was beautifully written and fun to read!

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review. Thank you, NetGalley and Peachtree Teen.

I read this on audiobook, which I recommend. I think the verse tends to lean more towards prose than poetry, but it made me enjoy the story more than I expected to.

The Ghosts of Rose Hill is a coming-of-age story interwoven with Jewish history, music, and ghosts. Ilana Lopez has been sent to live with her aunt in Prague for a summer as a punishment for her grades getting less attention than her dream of being a violinist. After discovering a forgotten Jewish cemetery, Ilana becomes even more embroiled in the city and the memories it has let time erode.

The story has strong themes of loss and grief, but also hope and endurance. It was a nice read but I also wasn't particularly attached to Ilana or her romance with Benjamin, but that might have been due to the length or pace. I enjoyed the message of the book and I also really enjoyed the historical elements and folklore weaving together. While I don't see this as becoming a memorable read for me personally, I would recommend if you're a fan of European myth, Jewish history, or music.

In the beginning of the book, it seems like the common YA book about a girl that need to gather courage to tell her parents she wants to play music instead of being a doctor or a lawyer. But the further you get into the book, the more you see the fantasy aspect and the Jewish background of Prague.

I love the Jewish history and the love for the dead Jews and the funeral it shows in the book. I come from a Jewish family, and it really hit some tear canals to read about the attacks that took place in Prague, and the whole setting in the novel.

I think the book was so well written and explained in a wonderful language, which can be read at different ages, so middle graders can learn about Prague in a different way.
I also really loved the fantasy aspect of the book, and the relationship between Benjamin and Ilana, that shows a lot of love and affection, and also shows what most important, that it isn’t to be together forever, but to give each other peace and love.

Overall a really great novel with a lot of lovely contexts and aspects.

I LOVED everything about this book, written in the form of beautiful poetry, It will stay with me forever! The darkness behind the words tugged on my heartstrings and kept me tied into the story on every page. Magical Realism is one of my favorite genres and this was just perfect! This was a beautiful, poetic, dark love story. It touched on immigration, dark pasts and a fight for passion. I really can't praise this book enough, not to mention the beautiful cover! The colorful flowers and artwork drew me in!! A MUST-READ for lovers of magical realism, fantasy and YA Fantasy Romance! Better yet a MUST-READ for everyone!

Thank you to NetGalley and Peachtree for access to this ARC in exchange for an honest review!
