I really liked the first half of this book but the second half DRAAAAAGED and, like a lot of the reviews were saying, was incredibly gruesome that really took me by surprise. One of the leads was pissing me offfff by the end too

A missing person thriller with an obligatory twist, competently written and paced but what sets it apart perhaps is it's a little more gruesome than most thrillers of its type, the cruelty of the protagonist is dwelt upon in a way that doesn't feel salacious, just surprising

Read this book in one day.

This was the worst book I’ve ever read.

3 ⭐️⭐️⭐️ (generous) audio

TRIGGER WARNING. TRIGGER WARNING.

Graphic violent crimes. Gruesome.

I had to “close my ears” to get through parts of this book. I felt there were too many graphic details which were unnecessary.

Also, the involvement of Claire in trying to solve some mysteries was not even close to being believable.

The story dragged for me and I finally had to “speed up the narration” to get to the end.

very drawn out

This book was very drawn out. Lots of rambling and seemingly side tracked thoughts and moments. However, i pushed through to finish.

Jesus Christ. I thought after listening to The Good Daughter and Pieces of Her I might be a little desensitized to Karin Slaughter. Nope.

This book was so horrific and so good. I will say it probably didn't hit me as hard because listening to it rather than taking the words in with my own eyes gave me a level of distance. This might be the opposite for most people but I'm a visual person.

I wouldn't say Paul being alive was the biggest twist but it also never even crossed my mind. The one silver lining of that was that Claire got to effing kill him like he deserved. Ugh, what a POS.

I'm so glad both Claire and Lydia made it out alive. If one of them had been killed I would've been devastated. But it was thoroughly satisfying. And upsetting. And brilliant.

I do wish there had maybe been more mystery around the death of Paul's parents. That's such an insane way to die that it had to have been orchestrated, right?

Also, fun fact: I was listening to the audiobook (LOVE Kathleen Early as a narrator) and somehow returned it to the library mid sentence. I was trying to return a different book and Pretty Girls vanished. And had holds! A two week wait! So I had to go to the library before work this morning to get the physical copy just so I could read those last breathless 50 pages. What a rush.
