3.5 but going to round down- actually finished it in time for book club. I'm glad I read it, as I'd heard of it for a while (haven't seen the film). Curious if anyone's done a cook along- likely have, in the last 35 years....!

Historical fiction magical realism! I read historical fic but not such much magical realism as I'm more of a high fantasy girlie. I'm reminded of Ishiguro's take on genre where fantastical elements are more like accessories to exploring the interiority of characters, and that's definitely here as no one seems to think "wow this is odd" about Tita's emotions splashing out with the foods she prepares. I finished this and [b:Casino Royale|3758|Casino Royale (James Bond, #1)|Ian Fleming|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1682789243l/3758._SY75_.jpg|2503304] the same day, and while they are wildly different in timescale (Casino Royale is a very brisk timeline, whereas Como Agua Para Chocolate is apparently over 22 years...??) felt meh on assault/implied assault towards female characters.

The recipes embedded did remind me of how I read cookbooks for fun, except far less technical.

I loved this book so much! An easy, quick read that is a beautiful love story. The magical realism was perfectly woven in. I'd love to try all the recipes!

No entiendo muy bien que acaba de pasar. La historia no está mal y es bastante atrapante pero, ese final? POR QUÉ?

I have a soft spot for magical realism, so this style combined with the recipe inserts really won me over. I bit cheesey in the second half, but no doubt a landmark story in the romance genre that I found to be oddly cozy and disturbing at the same time.

I liked the first half but then it just became annoying; some parts were a slog to get through.

I had to read this for a women's lit class. The writing and the magical realism were fine, and there were parts of the book that I thought were smart. It just wasn't really my thing.

Very well indeed. I loved this book. The poor Tita had to live a life where she couldn't get married. She had to take care of her mother until the day she died.
I think the book was excellent. I liked the way she incorporated recipes to the story, not only giving you the principal recipe but some other thing to cover. Also, I think that after all that happened she had her closure, with that beautiful kind-of-sad ending.
One thing that totally surprised me to read but was also delightful, was the exaggeration she used to describe some things or feelings. Like, for example, when she described all the tears they shed, or the heat they felt. I though that she managed all those parts very well. I though that the descriptions where precise and beautiful, sometimes even funny.
I absolutely loved this book, and I recommend it to anyone who wants to read a great book that will make you laugh and maybe even cry. Of course, maybe for the most little you wouldn't let them read this one, but it's not so.
