I enjoyed this book even though it wasn't as urban as I was expecting. I think the expectation should be a bit less Dresden and more His Dark Materials (at least that would have aligned my own personal expectations better). There is a fair amount of intriguing worldbuilding between all the different types of magic wielders and demons, and even though I don't enjoy the exposition-heavy focus that such worldbuilding usually entails, I was entertained learning the lore. This is in no short part due to the loveable duo of Bex and Adrian, though I would say Bex has much more of the spotlight. The worldbuilding and low stakes nature of the job made the first half drag a bit, but the second half was a breeze to get through. The characters and lore made the book for me, and I might check out the sequel.
Up to the halfway point I had a great time with "Hell for Hire".
It was funny and complex enough, but then everything fell flat for me.
The peble that started the avalanche was that we are suposed to ignore our "nicest person ever" just used a human's life that was in debt to him. Even if he saved that human long ago, that does not make it any more acceptable for the witch to sacrifice his life in order to save his crush.
I did not even minded that much when the plot started to be get convoluted, but when the author started to get preachy and hypocritical, this book totaly lost me.
I could be here al day pointing out those things but the worst was having the diverse for the diversity's sake characters kneal in front of their white queen. For real?
I don't think I'll read anything else by this author.

A cute and uncomplicated urban fantasy, set in an interesting world. I wish the witchcraft vs warlock vs sorcery thing would have been explored a little more!
I came across this author by chance, it was a random recommedation on a retailer site for "The Legend of Eli Monpress". I liked the look of the cover, read the blurb, bought it and have bought (and almost read) every book they wrote since then.
For the first few chapters I wasn't quite sure I would like this book, but once Adrian got to work on his Blackwood I got hooked. I enjoyed the slow building of backstories and the developement of the relationships (I would love to see more of Boston and Iggs). I would have liked to see more in general of Iggs, Nemini and Lys, some of their backstory was teased and I hope in future books we will learn more about them.
But what I really loved about this book is the ancient Mesopotamian mythology. I am learning so much (by looking most of it up for context) about it, the only other book I remember in this kind of setting was on of the "The Chronicles of St Mary's".
