“...when I’m around you I feel … as if you cast your light on me. As if I’m a little bit better—a better man, a better person—because of you.”
Episonage, murdure, snooty philosophers with hidden agendas, political tension, and a heartwarming romance somehow blooming amidst that mess. I was impressed by the author's ability to maintain a casual narrative throughout even while addressing serious topics such as slavery, gender, child mutilation, and coping with disability without making it seem forced or overly modernized.

I liked everything about this book, but especially the setting, the two main characters, and the slow pace of the romance. I also enjoyed the intrigue plot. It's a really immersive and satisfying read, and I'm eager to read more of this author's work.

I liked this book so call it a 2.5 or a 2 that I will probably recommend in the future.
Very serviceable alt history mlm romance, relatively tame and tasteful sex scenes. Looses a star for the wind going out of its sales around the 50-60% mark when the intrigue is revealed, looses another star for being a little boring in the bedroom but that's personal preference.

I loved the sweet love story and the ancient Mediterranean-inspired setting.
Damiskos, a solider tasked with administrative work due to injury, visits an old friend to arrange logistics for the military. There he meets a beautiful, graceful eunuch, Varazda. Immediately, he gets embroiled in political idealism that turns violent, and falls in love with the one person he doesn't know the complete truth about..
will be thinking about this book for the foreseeable future
