Damiskos, a solider tasked with administrative work due to injury, visits an old friend to arrange logistics for the military. There he meets a beautiful, graceful eunuch, Varazda. Immediately, he gets embroiled in political idealism that turns violent, and falls in love with the one person he doesn't know the complete truth about..

Slow start, historical mystery, somebody else read The Persian Boy

Really like the MCs! Plot is meh

I fully admit to owning this for years before I allowed myself to enjoy it. I can't quite say what made me so uncomfortable--whether at the time I was less interested in an ancient-world fantasy setting so close to real history or if, after the first few chapters, my mind cast it in a more martial/political light than I wanted to immerse myself into. But without this book, the rest of the series doesn't have the same impact, and a re-read has allowed me to appreciate the worldbuilding and the introduction to these wonderful characters.

Thank you for the ARC read, I voluntarily give this book an honest review. Right off the bat you get hooked in as Damiskos journeyed to see Nione. As he get acquainted with the other unexpected guest there. I have to say Gelon is pushing it with his whole attitude towards manly and unmanly (insert eye roll) really, After all we still have same ol' same now days. Damiskos appears unassuming as the a few of the guest's attitude takes on a more dangerous elements while others have him just plan confused. It all seems to center around the eunuch that is just as much a mystery. what is the real reason for a former guard and wounded soilder to have to be at there more was going on but what? Every time Damiskos is around Varazda leaves the man more confused in more than one way or stammering to complete his thoughts. Wow drama and actionable reading to keep anyone on their toes. This tale hits on so much, it brings good and bad emotional struggles that have always be issues that it's such a great must read only now I have to wait for the lovers to find their way back together.

Very enjoyable book set in Greek-inspired ancient fantasy kingdoms. Plot is not very epic, but character building, conversations, romance and dynamics between colorful eunuch Varazda and serious but extremely delicate in demeanor soldier Damiskos - are well-balanced. The topic of eunuch sexuality is shown in a very subtle manner, without discussing the trauma in details, probably not to shock readers. Persons who are afraid that it will be some explicit descriptions - do not be afraid :) It is really subtle, without fetishizing the eunuchs, well written. Good story, I loved it very much, but the first book is the best. Second and third much more dull and romance building slows down a bit, nothing interesting/new there.

Enjoyed this immensely but the ending was rather abrupt.
