Brubaker and Phillips have perfected the hard boiled crime comics and this is an epic story of seedy characters and the underworld.

This was such a blast. I read it in one sitting. It's just a cool character with damage ready to do violence because it's the right thing and it also pays the bills. The guy looks like Robert Redford and he dresses like he's on vacation, but he gets covered in blood. It's early '80s L.A. and it's totally streamlined pulp. What a flippin' treat.

This feels like the pilot episode of a television show, which I suppose is appropriate. Ethan Reckless is a pitch perfect pulp mystery hero, and Brubaker hits all the usual pulp tropes. The ending unravels a little too quickly and perfectly for my personal taste, but I wouldn't mind spending more time with Reckless.

This was good but like most of Brubaker’s stuff, I wish it had been more fleshed out. I liked the characters Brubaker set up with this first volume, but the plot was basic and didn’t let Brubaker plums the depths of the characters to the extent that he could’ve.
