Just not feeling the abusive husband, enabling wife narrative. Read a book last year with that theme and don’t want to go through that again lol

I wish there were more than 5 stars. I wish that my words were eloquent enough to describe just how beautiful this book is. My first book by thus author and was hooked. The characters tug at your heart. You want to hug each of them, the setting and plot is beautiful but dark and frightful. But, the community and acceptance is beautiful. I cannot say enough, this is one of my top 5 ever read and I will be reading it again to find things I've missed!

what a rollercoaster. like a love letter to the alaskan wildness alongside a harrowing depiction of domestic abuse. i loved the dichotomy and i can't believe how quickly 500+ pages went. i do feel like young leni was pretty unrealistic with regards to her body as a 13yo (idk any women who at 13 were "just wishing their boobs would come in" but i guess i wasn't around in the 70s to see if 13yo's acted that way back then). the love story was also a bit too close to twilight to take it as seriously as it deserved? i still got choked up at the end though!

The historical events in this novel are more of a place setting for the topics discussed. Abuse is a topic of discussion. Although readers will get frustrated with Cora forgiving Ernt on numerous occasions, it also is a fair depiction of the battle a battered girlfriend/spouse fight. Ernt’s opposition to Tom Walker’s changes to Kenaq introduces a discussion of old versus new that is generational. The topic that connects these discussions is love.
