I found this listening experience to be truly distressing. The narrator was amazing but the brutality and relentlessness of the story made it genuinely unpleasant to consume. It put me in a bad mood! I checked to see how many hours were left 4 or 5 times. So I absolutely do not recommend this book for all of those reasons. But it is well written and the characters are compelling. Maybe I’m just not built for consuming this kind of violence.

The beginning was slow and the plot devices used at the end felt very contrived, but I otherwise had a good time reading this. 

I also found Large Marge to be a problematic caricature of Black women that relied on harmful stereotypes. Especially knowing that the author is white, it made me uncomfortable.

I don’t read a lot of commercial fiction, but I know good commercial fiction has good pacing, and I think the pacing here was weird! Parts of the book were paced like historical fiction, then it would switch to the pacing of a thriller, and back and forth, and then I don’t even know what happened in the last quarter. But points for being good entertainment!

I didn’t expect to love this book as much as I did. I loved that it possessed romance and well as action and adventure, the storyline was amazing and even with the ones considered villainous, you couldn’t imagine this story without each and every character. Kristin Hannah is a wonderful writer who knows how to keep a reader engaged. It’s a very fast read and there wasn’t a single moment I was reluctant to turn the page. Highly recommend.
