Really more of a 3 1/2 star book. Not the best time to read it, what with winter and COVID and such. Pretty depressing. And too long, mainly because she felt the need to give the book a happy ending.

The Great Alone made me wade through the mess of my emotions and examine who I am as a man, husband and father. I enjoyed every second of this story, even when the tears filled my eyes.

Can Kristen Hannah write a bad book? There are still so many of hers that I need to read & cannot wait to get to them all. Set in Alaska, with characters the reader can feel, this story full of trauma is heartbreaking, angering, and real. Lennie and Matthew are wonderful & you cant help but cheer for them. Dad and mom are heartbreaking and hard. Large Marge brings the laughs to break up the hard parts & I just love her!
Trigger warnings: alcoholism, domestic violence, abuse
