What a beautiful book. This book details the life of the Douglas fir, but also deals with the history of life as a whole, and the history of science. It shows beautifully how everything in the world is interconnected, how many organisms can depend on a single tree and how much can happen in such a relatively small environment.

I admit that I am disappointed in this book, I was hoping for a poetic and introspective view from a tree. However, this book was loosely looking at that lifespan of a tree while departing down many rabbit holes to talk about history, science, and environmental changes. I am torn because I could see what the book was trying to do but it didn't work at all. I think I wanted more of the tree and less of the science and history. I ended up skimming a lot of this just to finish.

Somehow easy to follow be spite being about much more than a tree and skipping all over the place in terms of which bit of the eco system it is talking about at any point.
