Mythos
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

💭“For the world seems never to offer anything worthwhile without also providing a dreadful opposite.”

The perks to having minimal books on my non-existent shelfs is that I am actually reading through them all. Mythos was a Christmas present from my Aunt. I was exited about this book because Greek Mythology has always felt like something that wasn’t easily accessible without loads of research.

Stephen Fry retold these stories in a fun and engaging way that wasn’t as intimidating as I first thought it would be. Whilst I did need some help with pronouncing the names (like every fantasy novel ever), I had fun reading these stories and seeing just how interconnected (in a not so ok way) gods were.

My pre-existing knowledge of greek mythology was Zeus and his brothers and most of what I do know comes from Percy Jackson. So I definitely feel like I learnt something from this book.

Overall, it was fun and I am glad I have finally read it. This book is definitely not for everyone, I loved being able to dive into what felt like a history lesson without it being a heavy lesson (if you catch my drift).

I listened to this on audiobook and i like fry’s voice. I also thought this is a good book to get into Greek mythology as it covers the basics. Fry’s story telling is witty and informative I enjoyed learning about the Olympians.

Very enjoyable to listen to without a lot of commitment (although I did lose track of characters, so I may have benefitted from more careful listening, but I figured that's just the way it is with Greek mythology). I particularly enjoyed the earlier portions about the Titans and the origins of the Olympians, but got a bit weary once all the humans started their shenanigans. Fry really drove home the point that the Greek God's are made in man's image, as well as the other way around, and it was amusing how petty, nonsensical, and trite they could be. My favorite parts were the etymology bits, since language is so intriguing to me. I'll take a break so I don't get burned out, but planning on reading Fry's other Greek retellings.

This book really covers all the basics of Greek Mythology, right from the origin of the world and Gaia (Mother Earth) right up to the Silver Age. I love that the common fables and origin stories of places in modern-day Greece have been included. I appreciate the author's interpretations of the legend of the Pandora's box in the ending too.
Really loved the style of writing, as he kept it fresh and uncomplicated, yet continued to job my memory of certain charecters' history.
