A classic slow burn Dublin murder mystery from French, psychological and twisty with realistic and decidedly not cheesy plot advancing dialog. This story more so than the first 3 in the series had dragging sections where I felt in the moment that we were rehashing information that we already knew or arguments that we already had, but when I reflected back I think those pieces were ultimately important to convey the partners’ disagreements, steadfast commitment to their ideals, and twisty path to the truth. As usual with French I didn’t really see the resolution coming, which is refreshing in this genre! Another accolade I will share is that the setting is very much “a character” in this story — meaning the core motivations of the characters are informed and driven by their time and place — which I believe is difficult to pull off.
Graphic: Mental illness, Suicide, Violence, Murder, Abandonment
I'm a sucker for an Irish setting murder mystery, and this one had me hooked. I didn't even like the narrator/POV detective but still loved reading it.

Every time I read a new Tana French novel, I think, this is my favorite one. Broken Harbor is no exception. I love the balance between police procedural and the psychology of it all along with the depth she gives her characters. As always, can't wait for the next one.
