theoretically great, executed like shit. plot holes, continuity issues, the romance does nothing but drag the story down. reveals that couldve been great ended up just being frustrating.

i read cassandra clares books religiously as a 12 year old, and i havent been so disappointed in a release ever. not sure if her writing has always been this inconsistent or just this book specifically was a let down.

The second installment was definitely better than the first book. It moved a lot faster, and the romance aspect was much more prevalent. I still think that the chapters are WAAAAY too long and there could have been 100 pages edited out of this book.

Conor might be the prince of Castellane but he is the KING 👑 of yearning 😩 this man was out here spewing lines about needing a cure for the sickness that is fancying Lin. PLEASEEEEE and he’s so serious about it too 🙂‍↕️

Ragpicker king did not come to play with political intrigue and chaos. The secrets unraveling were DELISHHHHH. Esp the end one!!! Jaw on the floor!!

Parts of this book had me SICK TO MY STOMACH. Kel & Conor were trying to wipe me out. Their angst gave me so much anxiety I feared me and the toilet bowl were about to become besties. Book 3 needs to fulfill some of my requirements or I might just perish.

I’m desperate for the next book, I have so many questions!!!

Rating this book is hard, to put it simply.
On one hand, I enjoy Clare’s writing as always. Her voice is one I will always like. On the other, I find the premise of this series to be a bit… derivative. I cannot shake the thought that it feels like a blend of YA/New Adult fantasies that I have read in the past. And the characters? I love Kel and Lin. They are excellent protagonists and their stories are layered and complex and compelling to me. There is just one glaring issue that I cannot ignore, because it makes me blindingly mad while reading. The whole plot of this series centers on the character of Conor. And I. Cannot. Stand. Him. I think he sucks. I wish he had died in the first book. Which is amazing, actually, because we spend almost all of the two books in the POV of characters that are supposed to love Conor above all else, yet I cannot feel any of that love at all. It’s like being told over and over that this guy is lovable and Good and then turning around to see a cardboard cutout. Throughout this book everyone keeps mentioning how Conor has changed and grown. At least once per chapter. But do I see any evidence of that? No, I see him shirking responsibilities to chase a girl he’s into. I see him keeping secrets but hypocritically not giving his closest friend—practically soulmate in a way—the benefit of the doubt when he was keeping secrets. I just. It made me so angry I don’t know if I’ll be able to read the third book, despite how much I love Lin and Kel and want to know their stories.
