Was super excited to get back into this story. I felt the plot went a bit all over the place at times, and I didn't feel as strong a connection to the characters as I did in the first book. Interested to see what happens next, and if my feelings change in the sequel.

Prior to reading this, I finished Sunrise on the Reaping by Suzanne Collins. I loved that book, but every chapter felt like getting sucker-punched and smiling through the blood.

While I could feel Cassandra pulling back her fist as I read this book, the comfort of an author who has long influenced my reading was undeniable. Despite the stakes and waves of emotion from the various characters, this book provided such a comforting and cozy atmosphere. A “true” fantasy feeling. I could hardly put this book down, and I haven’t enjoyed a book in quite this fashion in what feels like a long time.

Fantastic, complicated characters. True and pressing stakes. Heavy emotions. Human mistakes. And the steady unravelling of the story.

Can’t wait for the next instalment.

Yeah the only character I really cared about was Lin.
Usually with political fantasy book with romance sub plots I am more intrigued by the politics, however with this book I was mainly there for the romance.
The betrayals didn't really matter to me because I feel so unattached to any of the side characters that so it was just a "meh" moment for me.
