I really enjoyed “Sword Catcher”, and I was excited to continue in this series.
“The Ragpicker King” picks up right where “Sword Catcher” left off. Kel is the body double for the prince, Conor, a job he is very proud to have and one that he takes very seriously. In order to continue to protect Conor, Kel must figure out who is behind a massacre, but the only person who seems to have any clues is the Ragpicker King. Lin has lied to everyone and made the claim that she is the Goddess Reborn, and now she has to face her lie head on. All she wants to do is save her best friend, but things are never that simple.
I think my enjoyment of this story was slightly dampened because it took me so long to read. I originally got the audiobook through Libby right near release date, but then I did not finish it in time and my hold took months to come in. By the time I did get it back, I was not as invested in the story as I once was. I did try to find that magic that originally captivated me.
I really enjoy Kel’s and Conor’s relationship and dynamic. It is so evident that they care about each other even though there is a very notable class difference between them. Conor could be atrocious to Kel, but he is not, and I love that. Their relationship is definitely tested in this novel and I did not love where they stood by the end of the novel. I am hoping in the next installment there will be some resolutions to their relationship.
Lin’s story continues to break my heart because she is trying so hard to save people and she is facing every challenge possible. I think she provides a great grounding presence for Conor and I hope we get to see them more in the next novel.
This sequel ends in quite the cliffhanger and I am very much dying to know what will become of our characters.
I cannot wait to pick up the next novel in this series!
