This book ruined my life. Nobody speak to me ever again and/or until we know when book 3 comes out. I will never recover. I need everyone to read this or I will literally die.

in this sequel to sword catcher, we follow kel and lin as they chart a perilous course between love and lies. kel finds himself caught between two worlds: in order to protect conor, he must work with the ragpicker king to find the culprits of a recent massacre. he discovers a conspiracy to destroy the royal family, led by none other than the man engaged to his love.

lin, on the other hand, works to maintain the lie that she’s the goddess reborn. her alleged powers will be tested, and if she fails, she will be exiled. her best shot is to work with the ragpicker king to access the magic that may help her. then, prince conor shows up demanding she use her healing powers to cure his father. soon, she finds herself drawn to an ancient and terrible magic…and to conor himself.

one thing about cassandra clare is she knows how to write relationships full of longing. kel and lin both had love interests who, for different reasons, could not fully be theirs. kel’s love interest, antonetta, is engaged (to a man kel hates, no less), and lin’s love interest, conor, would never be allowed to marry her. these romances captivated me the whole time, especially lin/conor.

that being said, this book had much more going on than the romance. the separate plots, explained a bit above, were both interesting. i really enjoyed seeing how things progressed with the ragpicker king. he was an interesting character! i’m very excited to see where things go in book three.
