4.5 stars!
Cassie Clare knows how to write second books. I was pretty "yeah, that was nice" for the first book. It was Cassie Clare, so it was a good book. But THIS.
There is a reason she's known for her romances that steal your heart and rip you to pieces. Because the yearning is UNMATCHED.
Lin and Connor think the other hates them. There is no conceivable way they can ever truly be together. (I have my theories.) But they want each other SO badly. Kel is like a lost puppy when it comes to Ana but she's about to marry a literal abuser. There's just nothing like Cassie Clare forbidden love and arranged marriage.
There's also this constant anxiety about everyone's damn secrets hanging over your head. Lin is trying not to be an imposter Goddess. Connor is trying to hide his father's condition. And Kel is just dripping in secrets from Connor. And you know that bitch fire princess is just waiting for the right moment to spring the trap shut on Kel and its awful. You just want to scream at everyone.
And then its ends like a classic CC book where everything sucks and you want to die. She's literally mastered this technique. Lord of Shadows and Chain of Iron are designed to rip you apart.
What I find interesting about reading "adult fantasy", particularly ones that heavily focus on romance, is just how much better the ones written by authors who started in YA are. Its like they sent the time to learn and craft true yearning and relationship building when they had to avoid explicit sex for the sake of the genre. Then when they do write it, its better because they know the value of earning it. Sex is boring and gratuitous, in my opinion, when no tension, stakes, or emotional connection has been established. And YA authors made a career of creating those elements. Its such a noticeable difference.
Anyway, I will sit and await the 3rd book. I get nervous about Cassie's finales, sometimes they can fall a LITTLE flat.
