It met everything I want in a cozy fantasy. Sentient creatures with personality. Loveable main character. Cozy magic. Baked goods and tea. And just enough dark elements to keep it from being "too syrupy" of a cozy read. It's got some great "Klaus" (Netflix holiday film) and "Nightmare Before Christmas" vibes when presenting dark descriptions and themes in a light way. Can't wait to read more T. Kingfisher. This would have been a favorite as a kid I would then want to reread as an adult. [Also anyone who is a parentified child... this book could resonate a lot for you.]

This was a delight. I wasn’t sure I was in the mood for a purely cosy book, but with it being T. Kingfisher, of course there was depth and sorrow and so much more. There were stakes and developed characters and reflections on what being a hero means when it’s politicized and so much more. This was one I’ll revisit and think of for awhile.
