This is the kind of book where you're there for a good time, not a long time.

A Wizard’s Guide to Defensive Baking by T. Kingfisher is a cozy-ish young adult fantasy novel following Mona, a fourteen-year-old wizard with an affinity for baking. When wizards in the kingdom are being targeted, Mona becomes a wanted person and is pulled into the politics and power struggles of the land. This book was such a fun read! All of the characters were lovable, there was action, a (loose) magic system, and semi-sentient baked goods, including a feisty gingerbread man and a mildly-violent sourdough starter named Bob. While the book had some interesting conversations about responsibility and what it means to be a hero, I don’t think it was particularly poignant. I had a good time reading it, though. If you are looking for a quick, lighthearted, and slightly silly but adventurous read, I’d recommend picking it up.

Compared to other cozy fantasy books would say it falls a bit lower on my scale but it was a fun read. I couldn’t get over Mona being 14. Hope her new title gets her unlimited mental health resources.

It was a pretty good story. It just wasn't for me.
