I received a copy of this eBook for free as part of the Kindle First program for Prime members.

In a nutshell: A not very good vampire horror novel.

I really had to push myself to get through this book; ended up skimming over the last 50 or so pages.

I downloaded this book free from prime first reads for January. All I knew was it was a horror book. I liked the look of the cover of the book.

The first half of the book was awesome (to page 100). It was moving along quickly with lots of action. I had no clue what would happen. It kept me wanting to read on.

Middle of the book - Oh, my it was so slow moving (page 100-200). I actually had to put it down as I struggled to read it. I also guessed what happened.

End of the book explained a lot and I did finish it.

For me, this book really tries to be too much. I was aware of the paranormal twist, but the discovery if vampires came about, my interest started to fall flat. I found myself looking up too many words throughout the book which distracted from the reading. Some of the formatting could be questioned as well as a few plot points as well. I won't go into details however to stop from giving too many spoilers.

The novel did have a good start, but between a mix of rather flat characters and an ending that I wouldn't consider the greatest, it fell fast. There was just too much drama that distracted away from everything else. Oh, and Jess also was a highly irritable character for me.

(Better review may be coming in the future when internet is steadily available.)

The plot of this book was interesting enough. Or at least interesting enough to make me finish it. The writing, however, was not very good. The prose was utilitarian and simplistic. Events were relayed in a straightforward fashion, with far too much telling and not enough showing. The author also has certain affects to the way that he writes which became predictable and a bit annoying. For example, many/most of the chapters ended with a short, overly dramatic sentence. (e.g. "He thought he had it under control. He was wrong." Additionally, it was really, really difficult to like the protagonist much, if at all. The other characters were flat and one-dimensional and, overall, it just wasn't a very good book.

I didn't know a novel about vampires could be so boring.

The book starts out as a mystery before bringing in a supernatural element.
The writing is in the style of Dean Koontz or James Patterson. A quick, enjoyable enough read that doesn't require much of the reader.

I know, it looks like I took for.ev.er to read this book. Well, I kinda did. It was my "emergency" back-up book that I read on my phone when I didn't have access to my normal reading outlets.

I thought this book started out great - totally a thriller beginning and I was really interested in the story. Then it got weird. Then it got REALLY weird. And not in a good weird way.

Overall, do not recommend. I'm glad it was free.

An interesting book that had a huge TWIST in the middle that I didn't see coming. Looking forward to reading more from Shepherd.
