This book should be considered together with Vazkor, son of Vazkor as two volumes of a single sequel to the Birthgrave. Vazkor's story goes through many of the same beats and revelations as his mother's, but the effect is different since now the reader has the advantage of having read the Birthgrave.

Vazkor's story is more full of pride and hate, while his mother's was more full of dread and wonder, but both overflow with grief. There is a peace in the conclusion, but it is an inhuman, mythic peace that can only be reached once the characters put aside their humanity.
