I've seen complaints that MC is a bit too perfect, and I can see why that could be said. But... holy cow was it nice to read about someone competent not making stupidly bad choices. The relationships between the characters were so enjoyable. Deep, platonic friendships and caring were just a joy to read about. I would have liked having many of them as friends.

Slow paced with a lot of dialogue, I'm almost surprised I enjoyed this book as much as I did.

Can't believe I've been waiting for this book without even knowing it.
It's such a pleasant journey without a care for destination. There were moments I cried, rejoiced and had my heart melt with pure bliss.

This is the kind of hope and happiness I've been craving for a long while now. Nd it made me so to actually have it.

The book begins with a dedication to the people who work within the system to change it. That system? Apparently a god emperor monarchy where you can be executed for speaking out of turn to the emperor of course. A noble place. But it is a noble place because even though it has rules like that it was written by a Christian so God is generally good and just.

All in all not much is going on in this book besides weird wish fulfillment and questionable views by the author reflected in unexamined story points and character relationships.

This definitely would've been a 5 star read had the last part of the book (1/3rd maybe?) been edited for brevity. Maybe that way, it wouldn't have had to hammer the point in quite so thoroughly and repetitively to the point I was skimming pages. Having said that, this is a great, big, enjoyable read about a small town guy that makes it in the big city. More or less anyway, just with all the fantasy elements. There are other reviews that will do this book justice, so I'll just say that if you are looking for a book you can really sink your teeth into, and you are a fan of work related competence porn, AND you love fantasy, I can highly recommend.

Characters: 5 stars
Heart: 5 stars
Tight storytelling: um, well, a book can’t always have it all.

This book is sooo repetitive, characters have nearly the same conversation at multiple points during the plot, and yet… I still really enjoyed it.
