Sharp, delicately-crafted portraits. Each story draws you in more than you’d expect on the outset.

Short stories are not really my thing as I like to get to know the characters on a deep level so I can relate to them. But the author can somehow make non-shallow characters and lovable plots in less than 40 pages. One or other story is a bit uneventful and less meaningful than the others but still catchy.

I don't have much to say. What I can say is that I love this book. Alice Munro has created a several characters that feels like real people and with qualities and thoughts that I ofen have myself, her way of writing is captivating and somehow beautiful. The way that the book is written in shows talent and that she know what she is doing.

Beautifully detailed vignettes. A lot of similar themes and situations come up again, so maybe a good one to dip into rather than read straight off. Very convincing characters and situations, and lots of mid-life regrets (with the occasional bit of redemption). Generally not the most uplifting stories, although their clarity somehow alleviates that.

It struck me while reading them that they are the type of stories that don't get told very often in comics.

A few short stories, 8 or 10 different ones of varying length, all taking place in Canada, mostly for the perspective of different women. The stories are quite different from each other but many of the women are very similar, which made them hard to distinct from each other

The first story is the longest and follow a middle aged woman who takes a leap of faith and quits her job for love. However, little does she now that the love is based on lies, made up by a couple for mischievous girls
The other stories follow other women, either married or growing up. The time period is difficult to determine but most stories seem to be about 70-30 years ago, a time with large difference in the freedom of women between generations. We follow many marriages, affairs, divorces and new loves.

Some of the stories have a larger theme, while others left me curios for what the meaning of the story was. The major problem for me was that they were quite long, making them a bit too long to read in one sitting

Devastatingly beautiful writing. The perfect distillation of emotions into words.
