I went into this not sure what to expect, but finding the synopsis appealing, and I was pleasantly surprised!
I am a sucker for regency romances, and this checked all those boxes for me, we even got some enemies to lovers thrown in there which I adored. I found myself laughing out loud quite a bit from our FMC. The banter between her and the other characters was great.
I don’t know how historically accurate any of this is, but that’s not necessarily something I look for in this genre.
I also loved the writing style, making me feel like I was reading a regency piece, rather than using modern writing in a historical time setting. The author also gave us multiple insights from various characters, but it’s written in third person so keep that in mind if that’s something you don’t like!
There’s also no spice in this, but that’s not to say that it definitely didn’t have moments of tension and some slow burn.
Honestly, not much didn’t work for me and I enjoyed it, but I can’t say I LOVED it. But it was a great genre change for me while reading pretty heavy fantasy and spice right now.
All in all, 3.75⭐️

My summer histrom binge seems to have come to an end. I can't focus on this one. I loved its sequel, so I'll give it another shot in the future.

This book was fabulous. I don't remember the last time I laughed out loud so many times in one sitting while reading any genre of book, much less a romance. Yes, I realize full well that some people will tut-tut over the fact that there is no way Kitty Talbot's persona would ever exist in the age into which it was projected. (A woman calling a man a "dolt" to his face, in public?!?!?!?) But, she is definitely one of my favorite heroines ever - for her humor and determination and loyalty, and even more so because the author gave her the courage to change during the course of her story. Irwin is also excellent at getting the reader to believe they see the emotions expressed by the multitude of characters, instead of just describing them. (Does that make sense?)
I loved it.
Maybe we can persuade Irwin to write a continuation of the younger sister's story? Please?

Nice summer read, somewhat predictable but then that's the point of these kinds of novels. Characters were fun, some good plot twists and a happy ending. Wonderfully read by Eleanor Tomlinson.
