I first read this back in middle school. I'd say it's pretty good if you're like 13 or 14. Kinda amateurish writing, felt too concerned with minute details that didn't really add to the story or worldbuilding.

I don't know, it has interesting concepts and keeps them appropriately mysterious, I like that not all questions are answered even though this feels like a very standalone kind of book. I think this was one of the first series I read where you could tell the first was intended to be its own thing and the latter 2/3 are their own story (I know other Old Kingdom books have been published since I was a teenager but still!).

Anyway - it's fine. Sabriel is a decent character but I felt like her romance with Touchstone comes right tf out of nowhere (and I remember thinking that even when I was a kid lmao) but whatever, it's a very standard kind of story in spite of the interesting necromancy concepts. Nothing groundbreaking here.

I wanted to like this and try out the whole series, but I didn't really find myself connecting with the main character or the world (many aspects of the world building I found very confusing and anachronistic). Unfortunately I don't have a strong desire to continue with the series soon.

Gets an extra star because the audiobook is narrated by Tim Curry.

The novel itself is perfectly fine. I liked the concept, the setup, and I really liked how the ending was not what I expected it to be. A lot in between the setup and the conclusion was hit or miss for me, but I enjoyed it overall.

An unusual adventure story with a lot of intriguing elements to the world. However, I found the importance of bloodlines kind of dumb, and the royal aspects mostly uninteresting. I liked the villain, though it reminded me maybe too much of The Farthest Shore by Ursula K Le Guin.

But, yeah, good enough.
