Great magic system, delightful depiction of Death, and some really fun characters. Sabriel's father is lovely, Mogget is my favorite, Touchstone bores me but he's just the kind of character who would bore me. I really enjoyed this book, but I don't have a lot to say about it. The author does a really good job of making you feel like you're struggling against forces that you can feel pressing against your soul. I have no idea why I didn't care for it when I was a teenager. Also Tim Curry is a perfect narrator for the audiobook, so I can't wait to read the rest of them.

I missed this book for a long time, despite repeated urgings from my former library boss telling me I would love it. I didn't love it, but I'm not a fantasy person.
Sabriel lives in a world with magic. She lives in a world where magic is guided by the Charter, and Free Magic is dangerous. She lives in a world divided by the wall. On the other side of the wall, chaos and Free Magic and death reign free. Now, with the death of her father, the Abhorsen, she must take up his duty of trapping the dead in Death. But she wants to save her father. She knows something is wrong about his death and his spirit can still be saved. Her quest with Mogget and Touchstone to the far reaches of the Old Kingdom will uncover the terrible things taking place over the wall.
I'm not a huge fantasy person, Harry Potter aside. But damn. This was one well-crafted world. At first, all the magic stuff was a bit confusing. But as I pieced it together, I was so impressed by how thoroughly this world was put together. It was one of those books that I could tell had barely scratched the surface of the world of the Abhorsen. And Garth Nix can write. Man he can write. Sabriel and Touchstone were great characters, and Mogget was fantastic. He provided some much-needed comic relief at times and was a complicated character.
I'm not sure if I will read the rest (mostly because I never finish a series), but I will definitely be recommending this to my fantasy-loving students.

Magic is slowly leaking into the world, the ancient walls and accords are no longer strong enough to hold it back; especially when the charge of the dead back into the world is led by a prince of the realm. The daughter of a necromancer and a prince, a demon shaped as a cat, and a prince long thought dead lead the fight to stave off the spirits of the dead.
As soon as I finished this one I had to go order the rest of the series.
