I’m over here, up on my soapbox, passionately wailing about the sheer awesomeness of this book.
Why, you ask?
Umm.
Good question.
Sabriel is... cool. And Moggat is, uh, funny. Touchstone... smiles that one time? Okay I don’t know but there’s something about this book that I can’t get over. I love the characters and the world building and the magic system and the way they talk and how Sabriel deals with stuff and how Touchstone is just so annoying at first.
The plot twists are brilliant and the battle scenes are epic and the flippin Dead things are terrifying. I swear I wasn’t breathing for the entire last two chapters.

Sabriel is such a smart, level headed, well-developed character. Her powers are so dark and counter-intuitive, but she’s also just a normal girl trying to figure everything out... while also not get murdered by all manner of Dark ThingsTM that are hunting her down. She thinks practically, Gets Over It, and whips out her dope bells (which are a whole other level of fascinating).
Touchstone is certified Soft. His swords are cool and he respects Sabriel and he smiles lopsidedly. I rest my case. Plus he’s so supportive and generally awww that I can’t stand him.
Moggat cracks me up. He’s an incredibly accurate cat and so much ~intrigue~. Reminds me a bit, in theory, of Silas from Sorcery of Thorns. *takes a moment of fond rememberence* *is deeply in love with Sorcery of Thorns* *gets on with the review*
In conclusion, I’m attached to all these characters—including the frankly incredible buffet of side characters—and will certainly not be getting over them any time soon.

I haven’t yet scrounged up the courage to read the rest of the series because this one’s just too precious.
Until then, I shall continue my dramatic profession of love Till My Dying Day, no matter what all you normal people say.

This was a reread i definitely love this book, also getting tim curry reading it was great. Definitely influenced by nostalgia but bit fan of this world

An okay story. Worldbuilding is fun, and the plot is interesting, but things became lackluster for me
Spoiler after the (info dump) boat talk with Sabriel, Mogget, and Touchstone
. Relationships between the characters (familial, platonic, romantic, etc.) were rushed and unbelievable. And! The ending was too abrupt for my liking.

Garth Nix always creates interesting worlds, but they can occasionally feel somewhat flat.

This book was quite the page-turner, and it was and is one of my favorite fantasy novels.

I found the story to be interesting and original but sometimes it was a bit too slow. My attention went to other books and I would pick this back up in between and get into it again and then lose focus again. Maybe it was just my mood this month, but I did enjoy the magic system and overall story.

Very nice beginning to an epic story.
