Engaging in spite of the rather shallow characterization. Rereading this, I wish Nix had given us a bit more of a chance to get to know Sabriel as an individual, but as it is I find her rather opaque/hard to connect with. I remember this weakness improving significantly in the second book.

I can see why this is considered such a classic. The magic system, in particular the necromancy, is really phenomenal enough to make the whole world exciting. The writing and the plot arc were maybe cliche and formulaic, but I don't mind as long as a book entertains me.

I want to delve further into the history and magical research that went into the system of seven bells that a necromancer carries. I want to read dusty accademic tomes of theory about why there are nine gates between Life and True-Death. What are the nature and the resultant rules of the realm between?

The setting was rich. The characters were archetypal, but not boring. The Plot had the constant rushed forward progress of a fantasy film from the 80's, but this book is contemporary to that time so I can feel forgiving to it.

The Audio Book was also narrated by Tim Curry, who delivered a solid performance even narrating the book with a young female lead.
