Such a large part of my childhood. Garth Nix writes such a badass heroine. Sabeiel is that girl. The tone is impeccable.
I think this is my favorite book I've ever read. What a beautiful work of art.

equal parts creepy and lighthearted. very cool world. for those who complained about the rushed romance, you must have never heard of trauma bonding lol
This was a great piece of read-straight-through-it fiction for me. My version of "summer beach reading."

An easy read and enjoyable story.
The only thing I found slightly annoying was that a couple of major points were mentioned in passing, as though they had been introduced earlier in the story. The characters seemed to be talking about things that had already been discussed, but I'm sure they hadn't been. I felt that this was a lack in the structure (or editing) of the novel.
However, I liked the characters and the setting, particularly the idea of the wall separating the Old Kingdom from a more familiar, technological-based world. The types of magic used in this story feel new to me, so that was also interesting.

I read this book in my teens (now mid 30s) and loved it then, it was one of those books that I returned to often in my youth and then kinda forgot about until recently.
My daughter and I found Terciel and Elinor in the library so brought it home and it inspired me to re-read Sabriel. I’d forgot how much I loved the series and now we have finished T&E, my daughter (age 8!) is devouring the ebook and wants to dress up as Sabriel for her next themed non uniform day - just a shame we missed out for world book day (she went as Danny the champion of the world instead). For a strong female main character, I’d take that as a win.
We’ll definitely be enjoying the rest of the trilogy and other books set in The Old Kingdom
