I've been reading a lot of fantasy lately, and this book was perfectly satisfying. Very gripping, suspenseful, and I loved all the characters and magic.
I want to continue this, but in paper form. I was excited about Tim Curry narrating, until I realized he would be the voice of a teenage girl

For whatever reason - or maybe several - this book just didn't hit the way I had expected/hoped it might. I couldn't quite grasp the time period, which made it difficult for me to orient the story in a larger context; I didn't gravitate to Sabriel as a character until very late in the book; and I found the romance sub-plot really bland and too insta-lovey for my taste. The magic system & Nix's take on necromancy was interesting, and I'm curious to learn more about the Old Kingdom, so I'll potentially move forward with the series despite my lukewarm feelings about this introduction.
Lord of the Rings crossed with Hunger Games, but not too much romance, just a tease.
3.5 stars. A very cool world and a fun story. I'm not particularly invested or moved by what happened, but I am interested in continuing on with the series.
I couldn't really care less for the relationship or the main male protag--Touchstone just fell a little flat on me--but I do have a constant urge to give Sabriel a warm blanket and a cup of hot cocoa. Please give this girl a break.
