Brilliant fantasy! But I thought the story that is set up in this book would continue through the entire series. Instead it's all tied up at the end and the next book starts a different story with mostly different characters.

Imagine you're reading The Fellowship of the Ring, looking forward to the whole series, and at the end of the first book they suddenly go all the way to Mordor and defeat Sauron. Huge disappointment, and I didn't like the second book.

A great early fantasy- quite scary at times. I enjoyed the adventure and humor. Holds up to the test of time despite being written in the 1990s. So much emotional whiplash with Mogget! I loved that the audiobook was narrated by Tim Curry. Looking forward to continuing the series.

What an amazing discovery. I had almost given up on finding flights of fantasy that fit the rare intersection of original, written with beautiful prose, and a genuine page-turner.

Sabriel is an adventure through coming-of-age, the father-daughter relationship, danger and bravery, and above all, death.

Highly recommended.

A fun fantasy romp. Characters were alright and the plot was pretty tight. I most enjoyed the world and the magic of it, brought further to life by Tim Curry's audiobook narration. I am yet undecided whether I'll check out others of this series. This one works well enough as a standalone, as I'd heard it would.

I really enjoyed reading this! The plot flowed really well and I loved how scenes that happened in the beginning set up the climax so well! The premise was super good. The characters were interesting. The romance was cute, and I appreciated that it wasnt the focus. 7/10

This was fine, but it was a little too "classic high fantasy" for me. That is, we got a little bit of nice character interaction and character development, but that didn't seem to be the point; the dense, complex world of magic and Charters and necromancy was the star here, and either I wasn't paying close enough attention or the world-building wasn't totally explained in a way that clicked with my brain. I generally enjoyed the parts of the world-building that I did understand, like the way Nix conceived of Death as a place you could go in and out of as long as you weren't carried past the final gate. The romance was contrived — neither Sabriel nor Touchstone had realistic or charismatic personalities and their attraction to each other seemed to be primarily a result of being two people of different genders who spent a lot of the book in each other's company. But then again, they were pretty standard characters for a high fantasy book, and I appreciated having a female lead for once.

I thought Tim Curry did a nice job with the audiobook narration, except that he couldn't decide on a pronunciation for Sabriel's name. He alternated between two different vowel sounds for the first syllable, which I found distracting.

This book definitely felt like a hole in my reading history until now, so I'm glad to have read it, but I don't think it was a book for me.
