the scariest thing i’ve ever read but damn was it well written

i probably should’ve taken the “horror” tag a little more seriously on this one tbh, it certainly delivered that. despite my frequent disgust and continual anxiety while reading this book i have to say it was masterfully written and absolutely delivered on what it said it would.

My first try at horror, and it was certainly an interesting experience!
I picked this up because, from the title, I thought it would have lots of comedic elements to balance out the horror but I was completely wrong! This was full on with the horror- and I didn't mind most of it! Hendrix is clearly a very talented writer and his descriptions were so vividly skincrawling. The horror scenes were generally really well done. The sense of dread was built up so well, as well as the mystery element.
However, some aspects I didn't like so much. Hendrix was doing a kind of social commentary and some of it landed, but some of it didn't. It felt like he was trying to say a lot and some of it was just lost as he didn't really go deeper rather than implying "that's bad"
I also don't really like sexual assault being treated as horror. It felt a little unecesary in places.

If you want to read this book, take into consideration there is mentions of sexual assault. I really enjoyed this book. I regret not having read it sooner when I first bought it a couple months ago! I do have to say that I did put it down for a couple of days in between just because I hated how badly everyone in the book was gaslighting Patricia and i HATED her husband. He was a total manipulative a-hole. And of course I cried when Slick died, she was such a genuinely good person.

This was a straight-up bad guy vampire story. I've been missing that in my fantasy novels lately. I loved the way the ladies of the book club came together to defeat him, with no special powers-just teamwork and sacrifice. The husbands were not supportive and that sucks, but these ladies came together for each other.
