This is my third Grady Hendrix book and I think it's my least favorite, although it was still very enjoyable.

The title was a *bit* misleading. It was predictable to an extent, but I still found myself on the edge of my seat. This book had an interesting take on a vampire novel where there was only one who fit the "mould" of a classic vampire in some ways and didn't in others. The husbands were trash, the wives were frustrating but ultimately had each other's back.

Loved the premise of the book and couldn’t read through the end fast enough. I loved all the characters in the book. However, I did not like how the book jumped into the future. It was clear that the time laps was necessary later on, but when I got there I felt the story getting was long and I wanted to start seeing things progress a little faster (and it definitely did but I think just a little late).
I haven’t read a lot of horror so I think I missed out on a few references but the horror in the book was compelling. I definitely squirmed a few times and maybe the suspense of wanting to know the ending made me read through it so fast.

EDIT: after talking with my mom about the book I’m not totally sure I feel the same way anymore… my mom opened my eyes to how Hendrix uses a lot of stereotypes for his characters and I read a review that had issue with all the SA included in the book especially the scene with
the minor.
The review called it unnecessary for men to always have their female characters face SA and I definitely agree with that.

I loved this book. I’ve been living in Charleston for the last 7 months, and actually had no idea that this book was based in Mt. Pleasant which was so cool to read about and literally visualize the roads as they are today.

This book was so well and cleverly crafted. It was suspenseful in all the best ways, and if I was reading it late at night I needed to put on something light hearted afterwards to wind myself down haha.

The women in this story were all real people who dealt with the politics of everyday life, well, everyday. I think this book had great examples of weaponized incompetence, everyday sexism, and the power of motherhood though the book definitely wasn’t centered around any of that.

Despite being a book about a vampire, the story was completely real and based in reality. Can’t say enough good things about it!

What a joy to read Grady's writing for the first time! The plot was tense and emotional. A few times I audabily said "OMG". After 55% I couldn't put it down for a second.

The characters were all so realistic and I treated them like my own friends. I cared for them. Patricia and Slick 💖 This book made me tear up a few times.

Others say the Nazi references were weird and unnecessary but for me it added that extra layer of connecting to background characters. This is not a book to skim read.

Half a star taken away because I don't think it has a profound cultural or otherwise impact. I am not sure about its rereadability. Quarter of a star taken away because of that one super extravert character - Kitty, I love you but honestly shush 😂.

I am sad it ended, but waiting patiently for Amazon's TV show. Hope it will do it justice!
